4 Planning Moves for Your Mid-60s

Picture this…

You’re in your mid-60s. You’ve done the hard part. The portfolio is north of $3M, and the question is no longer “will I have enough?”

It’s “what do I want this money to do?”

Maybe that looks like a place in the mountains where the grandkids come every summer. A little more time with family. Taking care of your health: physical, mental, and spiritual.

When I sit down with someone in this season of life, here’s what the conversation tends to cover…

(1) Keeping the family place in the family. If you want your heirs to enjoy a vacation home, a trust can hold the house, and life insurance can provide the cash to maintain it so no one is forced to sell.

(2) Giving back. A Donor Advised Fund lets you fund your charitable giving now, take the tax deduction today, and grant the money out over time.

(3) Stacking tax wins. That DAF deduction can help offset the tax bill from converting part of a pre-tax IRA to a Roth. (That one deserves its own newsletter.)

(4) Long-term care. Reviewing existing coverage, or deciding how you’ll pay for care if you need it.

Notice what’s missing?

We barely talk about investments. The portfolio is low-cost, diversified, and built from index funds. It gets reviewed, rebalanced, and checked for tax-loss harvesting opportunities. But we’re not going to tinker just to look busy.

The money is the tool. The plan is the point.

Stay disciplined. Let’s get to work.
